Together with Ricardo, Bluebox Energy has won funding through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio to design a community-scale greenhouse-gas removal system.
The consortium combines Bluebox’s hot air turbine technology — already providing renewable energy to homes, business parks and agriculture — with Ricardo’s carbon-capture expertise. BIOCCUS will produce biochar, provide renewable heat and electricity for towns, villages and agriculture, and sequester carbon dioxide from the flue gas.
Sustainably sourced waste wood from domestic timber is processed three ways: biochar, heat and power, and captured CO₂. The system captures up to 95% of the carbon dioxide absorbed by the trees. Biochar can go to farmers for animal feed and soil. The CO₂ can go into low-carbon concrete. All three attract carbon credits.
